What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy at Clinic Altera
At Clinic Altera, we view psychotherapy as both a science and an art: a structured, professional process that fosters integration, growth, and transformation.
According to the Ordre des psychologues du Québec (OPQ), psychotherapy is:
“A psychological treatment for a mental disorder, behavioural disturbance or any other problem resulting in psychological suffering or distress, with the aim of promoting significant changes in the client’s cognitive, emotional or behavioural functioning, in their interpersonal relationships, in their personality or in their state of health.”
Psychotherapy is therefore much more than supportive listening. It is a professional intervention, delivered by trained and licensed psychotherapists, designed to help clients better understand themselves, their relationships, and their patterns in order to create meaningful change.
Our Approach to Psychotherapy
At Clinic Altera, we provide psychotherapy for:
Individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, identity, or life transitions
Couples and families seeking support with communication, relational struggles, or conflict
Mini-Intensives:(Focused Reset & Reconnect)
Sometimes you need more than a standard 50-minute session, but not a full multi-day intensive. Our Focused Reset & Reconnect sessions offer 1.5–3 hours of extended, in-depth work. Scheduled as needed; often monthly or during pivotal moments, these sessions give you the space to go deeper, gain clarity, and reconnect with yourself.
Fee Structure (based on length, billed hourly)
Best for:
Working through a specific theme or challenge
Feeling “stuck” in weekly therapy and needing momentum
Managing acute stress, burnout, or major life transitions
Navigating grief, relational conflict, or family challenges with more time and depth
For couples and families, the work often focuses on re-establishing safety and connection in relationships, supporting clearer communication, and healing old wounds in a collaborative, non-judgmental space.
The tone of these sessions is not rushed. We take time to slow down, notice patterns, and explore what has been difficult to access in shorter appointments.
Why This Matters
Mini-Intensives offer a bridge between weekly therapy and full intensives. They create a warm, supportive container where meaningful shifts can happen in a shorter amount of time.
For individuals, this format can spark fresh insight, help move through blocks, and support integration of past therapy work.
For couples and families, it provides a protected environment to pause the cycle of conflict and rediscover each other with greater openness and compassion.
For anyone navigating grief, stress, or transition, it offers extended time to be deeply held, heard, and supported.
In essence, Mini-Intensives are about giving yourself enough time and space to truly land in the work. They are an opportunity to reset, reconnect, and carry forward new clarity into daily life.
Our therapists draw on evidence-based approaches including psychodynamic, relational, somatic, behavioural, and trauma-informed modalities. Sessions are collaborative and tailored to your unique goals, always grounded in respect for diversity, inclusivity, and your lived experience.
Psychotherapy Formats at Clinic Altera
Traditional Psychotherapy Sessions: Typically 50 minutes in length, available in-person or virtually through our secure platform.
Psychotherapy Mini-Intensives: 1.5–3 hours of extended, in-depth work
Psychotherapy Intensives: Highly focused multi-day formats designed to accelerate progress and deepen therapeutic work.
Specialized Interventions: Integration of modalities such as the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) or Brainspotting to support nervous system regulation and deeper processing.
Other Services: Counselling and Complementary Interventions
Not every concern requires psychotherapy. At Clinic Altera, we also provide access to a range of counselling and psychosocial services that can stand alone or complement psychotherapy. These include:
Counselling: Short-term, solution-focused guidance offered by professionals such as Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCCs) and guidance counsellors (C.O.s).
Brief Therapy: Targeted, time-limited support for specific concerns such as stress management, relationship challenges, or adjustment issues.
Sexology: Evidence-informed, affirming support for sexual health, intimacy, identity, and relationships.
Psychosocial and Body-Oriented Care: Services from psychosocial care workers and body-based practitioners that support overall well-being, nervous system regulation, and resilience.
These interventions broaden our continuum of care, ensuring that clients can access the right level of support, whether through psychotherapy or another professional service.
Choosing the Right Path for You
Our intake process helps determine whether psychotherapy, counselling, or another supportive intervention is the best fit for your goals. We value transparency, collaboration, and accessibility, ensuring that each client receives care aligned with both their needs and the scope of practice of our licensed professionals.
